White Mountain Hotel & Resort Completes Major Upgrade
By Dave Daubert
The White Mountain Hotel & Resort in North Conway, New Hampshire has reopened after undergoing a $3.5 million renovation to all of their 80 guest rooms. Resort owners Gary and Carol Sullivan said the renovation project was a lot of work, with the hotel closing but the results were well worth the effort, time and expense.
"It was ambitious, but we made it," said Gary, the resort's founder and General Manager. "Closing the resort for three months allowed us to go all-in to update every aspect of the hotel, inside and out." The work was done by Gary Chicoine Construction of Weare, N.H. with original builder Ed Poliquin of Conway serving as project consultant. "Ed loved the original project so much he wanted to be involved," added Gary. The upgrades included a redesign of all guest rooms, suites and hallway decor along with extensive exterior improvements. Each floor now has a guest pantry for coffee, ice and water.
The Sullivans hired interior design firm Truexcullins based in Burlington, Vt. to do that part of the project, which redid the redesign for the Cliff House in Ogunquit, Maine. When Carol and Gary saw those designs they knew that was the look they wanted. Truexcullins Principal Kim Deetjen said the design was inspired by the natural location of the resort. While the spectacular mountain views remain unchanged, the new interior now reflects a modern take on the natural beauty that surrounds it. "The hotel interior now has a personal, residential feel-warm and inviting, paying tribute to the local vernacular." Guest room entryways now feature hardwood floors. The rooms' carpeting was all custom-made. On the walls of the hallways are black-and-white photographs taken by local photographers showing local landscapes.
"We love the White Mountains and Mount Washington Valley. It's a beautiful four-season area that we get to call home, and now the rooms reflect the local landscape because the valley and the mountains are a great place to come and recreate," said Carol, the resort's Marketing Director. The 254-acre White Mountain Hotel and Resort is located within one of the most unique and diverse landscapes in the Mount Washington Valley.
The natural surroundings offer a broad range of experiences that instill a sense of discovery and inquiry.
The Resort features a full-service,120 seat Ledges restaurant, Tullamore tavern, event facilities, a year-round outdoor heated pool and hot tub, game room, spa, gym, Finnish saunas, recreation courts featuring tennis, pickleball, shuffleboard, corn-hole, basketball, miles of hiking and biking trails from the property and golf. The resort and golf club have been welcoming guests since 1990 and awarded a "Top 5 Best Hotels in New Hampshire" by US News & World Report magazine.
Hale's Location Golf Club is situated on the property of the resort and was voted "One of the most unique and singularly beautiful golf developments in the country," by Golf Magazine. The picturesque 9-hole, par 36, 3025-yard golf course gives the golfer a feeling unlike anywhere else in New Hampshire with its backdrop of the White Mountains and stunning countryside, surrounded by state and national parks. The golf course winds its way through stately forests with crowned bentgrass greens, lush fairways and testy bunkering. The course is used for cross country skiing and snowshoe walks during winter. The course is open to public play and has memberships available. Hotel guests receive special tee times and rates.
If you are looking for a cooling respite from the sweltering heat, White Mountain is the place to go, stay and play.
